Hi. I'm Kate.

Welcome to my blog. I document my crazy life and attempt to update our 1980's home. Hope you have a nice stay!

The mid-century modern look is having a huge comeback and I am 100% here for it. You can’t even step into Target these days without seeing the retro inspired look filter through every aisle. Flipping through a West Elm catalog, or better yet - taking a journey out to their store will have you so in love with the clean lines, sleek look, and fun colors that you’ll want to run home and redecorate.

I decided to spend some effort freshening up my living room and adjoining office to reflect this fantastic moment in decor. I found a great piece at Ikea that I gave just a touch of DIY treatment to. (It really does not need much.)

Check out this cabinet I found for our living room.

Isn’t it gorgeous? I am obsessed with the clean look of white and the hexagon pattern!

Ikea for the win! It’s a part of their “Besta” line. You can find it here.

The doors and drawer fronts are white and the top and sides have a faux gray-ish light brown stained effect. At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to add handles to the drawers or knobs to the doors at all. It really did look very impressive all on its own. But I found these fantastic pulls and knobs at Pottery Barn and I could not resist.

I am very happy with the outcome.

I loved it so much that I decided to get a larger one for my office.

Those hexagons! They make me so happy! Once again, I picked up cabinet pulls from Pottery Barn. Here’s a close up:

I don’t worry about the faux wood grain matching the floor or the other wood in the room. I love to mix colors and textures. I have some rustic style mixed in with my grandfather’s old desk - which truly is a mid century piece - along with my more modern style items and my fun gallery wall.

Now that this room is fully functional we should probably get the trim re-painted and re-hung. Every time I post a photo I notice it and silently curse myself for not having done it sooner.

See my new typewriter over there on the bottom shelf? It belonged to my grandfather. I planned to put it in the living room in the book case but I did not realize how GIANT and HEAVY it would be! #notalaptop. It fits right in with my mid-century modern makeover and eclectic style.

Aaaand if you are wondering why I have one mismatched book shelf it is because Crate and Barrel has decided that espresso is no longer a trendy enough color. The other three were purchased probably ten years ago and when we moved to this house we need one more to fill out the space. I was going to stain it but … yeah, that never happened.

This is the other side of the office. Usually you will find one of my kids here waiting for me to get up from my work and get them a snack. #alwaysgettingsnacks

And finally, I love how the two pieces of furniture frame the living room and office as a larger space. From the office you can see the cabinet in the living room …

I love how they bookend the two rooms with the mid century modern style!

Everything old is new again!
